Civilisations
Very little is known about civilisation of this group of people or why they settled in this part of the world. The Chinese government has allowed little access to the mummies so research has been limited. There are several links to the European way of life at the time the mummies were buried.
The burial sites of Cherchen Man and his fellow people where marked with stone structures that look like dolmens from Britain, ringed by round faced, Celtic figures or standing stones. The Churchen Man was buried wearing a red twill tunic and tartan leggings. In her book "The Mummies of Urumchi" textile expert Elizabeth Wayland Barber examines the tartan style cloth, and says it can be traced back to Anatolia and the Caucasus, the steppe area north of the Black Sea.
Several items found in the tombs give hints to the civilisation of the mummies. Ancient wheat has been found that was not indigenous to the area suggesting the people were farmers. A babies bottle fashioned from a sheep's udder was found in a tomb. Sheep are also not indigenous to the area, so this suggests the people were herders and brought sheep with them. There were very few weapons buried with the mummies, so a peaceful society can be concluded.
While allot of their civilisations details remain a mystery the burial of the Takla Makan mummies has revealed much. With on going research I'm sure more will come to light.
